5 Reasons your résumé is holding you back from getting interviews

Never underestimate how important it is to have a good résumé, it is your gateway to making a first impression on a potential employer.

Here are tips on how to better improve your chances at getting a callback:

  1. You include a cheesy goal statement

If you feel you need to include one, make sure its brief and summarizes your skills and experience instead of stating that you want to further your career. Employers know that everyone applying for a job is seeking a career, to gain experience.. etc and most importantly, a pay-check.

  1. You praise yourself too much.

You want to reel in the employer so they consider meeting you for an in person interview. Keep your list of hobbies and talents on a professional level, don’t list shopping as a hobby or list your only flaw being that you are a perfectionist. Once you get an interview, jokes, and quirky characteristics become more tolerable in person.

  1. Your work experience listed is irrelevant to the job you are applying for.

Make sure your résumé is short and sweet, only listing jobs that have importance and more relevance than a babysitting job when you were 16 years old. Employers don’t enjoy reading through a résumé that is multiple pages of useless credentials, and will most likely ditch your CV before they are done the first page.

  1. Your email address is immature.

It’s very simple, if you are applying to jobs with an email address that includes the words; princess, sexy, 69, Pokemon, or anything similar, you can bet your bottom dollar you aren’t getting an interview. Consider upgrading your professional appearance by creating an email address with your first and last name.

  1. You don’t check your junk folder.

Many interviews are established by email these days. Ensure that no important emails are being neglected due to it being in your junk folder. Check your junk folder religiously to avoid late replies to employers, who have already moved on to the next candidate.
